So at least Joe Satriani did not hand out his subpoenas to Coldplay at the Grammy’s, which shows that the gifted guitarist has some sense of karma, as the band from England was not responding to his calls to answer whether or not Chris Martin and the other Coldplay members had actually stolen borrowed his songs main riff, or perhaps it was all just some subconcious thievery.
For anyone who is a musician, there is a You Tube Video that goes into depth about the musical theory of whether or not it is actually worth Joe Satriani pursuing, and is quite educational for the average rock fan.
You can call this the case of “If I Could Fly” vs. “Viva La Vida” and should be interesting in the fact that usually when it comes to just music, the courts have in the past not had a problem with music being copied, what has been the problem is when someone steals the lyrics of a song, and not so much the music.
Joe Satriani is known as a guitarist soloist, and not a singer, but the guitar solo from “If I Could Fly” and the lyrics from “Viva La Vida” sound eerily familiar. Either way, both are very easy to listen too, and that is what the performers wanted, now it is up to the legal system to figure out who is right in battle of the bands.
Below are the video for “Viva La Vida” and for “If I Could Fly” so you can make your own decision, check out the :50 second to the 1:15 time in the Satriani song, this is where most of the controversy will be found……………….
